NEW 2016 Megadome Kies 2 - Moon age 9.8 days (68 %)

IKies 2 is an intrusive megadome with an elliptical shape. It has an size of approximately 51 x 34 km and a height of only 55 meters. The flank angle is only 0.15 degrees.

Because of its low height and the low flank angle Kies 2 is extremely difficult to image. Even with an optimal illumination an extreme image processing is required.

The dome is associated with a linear rille and a sinusoidal rille on its surface, which is interpreted as lava channel. Its morphology is similar to the large dome Valentine 1 (see segment 05 D).
NEW LRO Kies and Kies phi

The LRO image shows the two domes Kies 2 and Kies phi. The linear and sinusoidal rille are visible. The image resolution is 125 m/px.

Moon age 10.6 - 10.8 days - Illumination 75 - 77 %

Capuanus and Marth - Moon age 10.6 days (74 %)

Capuanus 1 is one of the few effusive domes inside a crater. It has a small summit caldera and a diameter of only 7 kilometers with a height of 100 meters. It is a Class C2 dome. In the crater Capuanus (58 km) should be two more are domes but they are not really visible in our images.

Northwest of Capuanus, inside of Palus Epidemiarum, you can find the only 6 km small concentric double crater Marth. It is one of the few concentric double craters (similar Archytas) wich are located on a slight upwarp. It is unknown if it is coincidence or volcanic origin.
Kies - Moon age 10.6 days (74 %)

Near the crater Kies (44 km) are two domes. Kies 1 (also Kies Phi) is a typical effusive dome with a summit crater (diameter about 2 km). It has a diameter of 13.5 kilometers and a height of 160 meters. It is easy to observe over an extended period of time due to its relatively large height.

Kies 2 is very large with a size of 51 x 34 km. However, it only reached a height of 55 meters. Therefore it is not easy to observe the dome. On its surface there is a linear and a sinusoidal rille, which could indicate that Kies 2 is a mixture of intrusive and effusive volcanism. Rilles are clearly visible in this image, the plateau can only be guessed.
Plateau Agatharchides - Moon age 10.6 days (74 %)

In this region there is another large putative plateau, with the inofficial name "The Helmet" (based on the helmet of Darth Vader from the Star Wars movies). Officially named as Aghatarchides megadome. It is located at the east of the FF-crater Gassendi and has a size of about 50 kilometers. On the surface are a number of rilles. Probably it is an intrusive structure with a height of about 400 meters above the surrounding lava. Even in color this area stands out from the surrounding Marelava.

Similar structures can be found further to the north in the neighborhood of the crater Darney and west of Montes Riphaeus.
Capuanus - Marth and Kies 1 - Moon 10.6 days (75 %)

Capuanus, Marth and Kies 1 with similar illumination.
NEW 2016 Marth - Moon age 10.8 days (77 %)

The concentric double craters Marth and Capuanus 1 at similar illumination as above.

The concentric double crater Marth is located in the northwest of Capuanus, in the middle of Palus Epidemiarum. The diameter of the crater is only 6 km. It is one of the few concentric double craters on a small upwarp (similar Archytas). It is unknown if this is coincidence or caused by volcanic activity.

LRO Hesiodus A and Marth - comparison of two concentric double crater

The LRO image with a resolution of 64 m/px shows a direct comparison between the concentric double craters Hesiodus A (left) and Marth (right). Marth is clearly located on a flat intrusive upwarp, there is no such structure at Hesiodus A.

Other double craters on a flat upwarp are Mairan T and Archytas 1. However, both are so close to the limb of the moon that the dual structure is not visible from Earth.

Kies Phi - Moon age 10.6 days (75 %)

Kies Phi at similar illumination.
NEW 2016 Kies Phi und Kies 2- Moon age 10.8 days (77 %)

At this illumination the megadoem Kies 2is unvisible.
NEW 2016 Agatharchides Megadomeplateau- Moon age 10.8 days (77 %)

The Agatharchides megadome plateau at sunrise. It is also unofficially named as "The Helmet". It is a irregular shaped and structured plateau with a size of 64 x 50 kilometers. The plateau reaches a maximum height of about 300 meters. The northern mountain ridge is about 1200 meter above the surrounding area. At the eastern rim a sinuous rill is associated

The LRO image shows the Agatharchides megadome with an image resolution of 125 m/pxl.

Capuanus - Marth and Kies - Moon age 11.6 days (84 %)

At a moon age of 11.6 days the dome Capuanus 1 and Kies 1 are almost no longer visible.
Plateau Agatharchides - Moon age 11.6 days (84 %)

Megaplateau Agatharchides at a moon age of 11.6 days. To the west there is the great tilted floor fractured crater Gassendi (110 km). This is an optimal illumination situation to observe the complicated system of rilles on the crater floor of Gassendi. The tilt of the crater towards the Mare Humorum can be also clearly seen.
Capuanus and Marth - Moon age 11.6 days (84 %)

Capuanus and Marth at a moon age of 11.6 days. Capuanus becomes "invisible".

Moon age 12.1 days - Illumination 87 %

Agatharchides and Gassendi - Moon age 12.1 days (87 %)

The Agatharchides plateau and Gassendi at a Moon age of 12.1 days. The rilles on the plateau are no longer visible with this illumination. The system of rilles in Gassendi is not as rich in contrast as at the moon age of 11.6 days.
