IC 2602 and Melotte 101 in the constellation Carina
IC 2602 und Melotte 101 - vor dem Hintergrund der südlichen Milchstraße im Sternbild Schiffskiel schwebt in unserer Aufnahme der offenen Sternhaufen IC 2602. Der Haufen befindet sich in einer Entfernung von rund 480 Lichtjahren zum Sonnensystem und ist damit einer der nächsten offenen Sternhaufen. Sein wahrer Durchmesser beträgt etwa 10 Lichtjahre. Das Alter des Sternhaufens wird auf etwa 50 Millionen Jahre geschätzt. Nach Trumpler wird er der Klasse II 3 m zugeordnet. Die Gesamtanzahl der Sterne von IC 2602 beträgt etwa 60 Sterne.
Nur etwa 40 Bogenminuten südlich von IC 2602 liegt der offene Sternhaufen Melotte 101. Der Sternhaufen beinhaltet etwa 50 Sterne der 10. bis 12. Größenklasse. Seine Entfernung beträgt knapp 7.000 Lichtjahre zum Sonnensystem und hat einen wahren Durchmesser von ungefähr 25 Lichtjahre. Die Sterne sind mit etwa 65 Millionen Jahre etwas älter als die Sterne von IC 2602.
Object description
IC 2602 and Melotte 101 - Against the background of the southern Milky Way in the constellation Carina, the open star cluster IC 2602 floats in our image. The cluster is located about 480 light-years from the solar system, making it one of the nearest open star clusters. Its true diameter is about 10 light-years. The age of the star cluster is estimated to be about 50 million years. According to Trumpler, it is classified as Class II 3 m. The total number of stars in IC 2602 is about 60.
Only about 40 arcminutes south of IC 2602 lies the open star cluster Melotte 101. The star cluster contains about 50 stars of magnitudes 10 to 12. It is located just under 7,000 light-years from the solar system and has a true diameter of approximately 25 light-years. At about 65 million years old, the stars are slightly older than those in IC 2602.
