An open star cluster and Thackeray globules in the constellation Centaurus
Sternentstehung und Thackeray Globulen in IC 2948 - Unser Bild zeigt den zentralen Teil der faszinierenden Sternentstehungsregion IC 2948 im Sternbild Zentaurus, bestehend aus H-II Emission, Dunkelwolken und blauen Reflexionsnebeln. Merkwürdigerweise ist der helle, sehr junge offene Sternhaufen nicht mit einer eigenen Nummer im NGC Katalog erfasst. Die Region liegt etwa 6.500 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt.
Das besondere an dieser Region sind eine Gruppe von sehr dichten Staubwolken um den Sternhaufen herum, die als Thackeray-Globulen bekannt sind und sich von dem blassrosa leuchtenden Gas des Nebels abheben. Sie stehen unter einem heftigem Bombardement durch die starke ultraviolette Strahlung der ehißen jungen Sterne des Sternhaufens. Sie zerstört die Thackeray-Globulen, bevor sie kollabieren und neue Sterne bilden können.

Object description
Star formation and Thackeray globules in IC 2948 - Our image shows the central part of the fascinating star forming region IC 2948 in the constellation Centaurus, consisting of H-II emission, dark clouds and blue reflection nebulae. Curiously, the bright, very young open star cluster is not recorded with its own number in the NGC catalog. The region lies about 6,500 light-years from the solar system.

What makes this region special is a group of very dense dust
clouds around the cluster, known as Thackeray
globules, which stand out against the pale pink glowing gas of the
nebula. They are under a fierce bombardment by the strong ultraviolet radiation
from the cluster's easterly young stars. It destroys the Thackeray globules
before they can collapse and form new stars. The complete region was discovered late - in 1904 - by Royal Harwood Frost.
