NGC 2112 - An open star cluster in the constellation Orion
NGC 2112 ist ein offener Sternhaufen im Sternbild Orion. Er beinhaltet etwa 50 hellere Sterne und wird nach Trumpler der Klasse II 3 m n zugeordnet. Die Entfernung zur Sonne beträgt etwa 2.800 Lichtjahre. NGC 2112 wurde am 1. Januar 1786 von William Herschel entdeckt.
Die schwache H-II Emission im Hintergrund in unserem Bild ist Teil von Barnards Loop (Sh 2-276). Es ist vermutlich der Überrest einer Supernova die vor etwa 2 Millionen Jahre explodiert ist. Die helleren Teile von Barnard's Loop hat vermutlich schon Wilhelm Herschel im Jahr 1786 gesehen.
Object description
NGC 2112 is an open star cluster in the constellation Orion. It contains about 50 brighter stars and is assigned to class II 3 m n according to Trumpler. The distance to the Sun is about 2,800 light-years. NGC 2112 was discovered by William Herschel on January 1, 1786.
The faint H-II emission in the background of our image is part of Barnard's Loop (Sh 2-276). It is probably the remnant of a supernova that exploded about 2 million years ago. The brighter parts of Barnard's Loop were probably seen by William Herschel in the year 1786. .
