The open star cluster NGC 2362 in the constellation of Canis Major
Der kleine aber feine offene Sternhaufen NGC 2362 befindet sich im östlichen Teil des Sternbildes Großer Hund. Er wird vom hellen Stern tau Canis Majoris (tau CMa) dominiert. Dieser Stern ist ein enges Mehrfachsternsystem aus 3 heißen und sehr massereichen Sternen sowie möglicherweise weiteren, schwächeren Komponenten. Aufgrund des hellen Zentralstern wird er auch manchmal als Tau Canis Majoris Cluster bezeichnet.
Er ist etwa 4.200 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von ungefähr 7 Lichtjahren. Er enthält eta 60 Sterne, die erst ein paar Millionen Jahre alt sind und wird nach Trumpler der Klasse I 3 p zugeordnet. Entdeckt wurde NGC 2364 von Giovanni Battista Hodierna, einem italienischen Astronom, um das Jahr 1654.
Object description
The small but beautiful open cluster NGC 2362 is located in the eastern part of the constellation Great Dog. It is dominated by the bright star tau Canis Majoris (tau CMa). This star is a close multiple star system consisting of 3 hot and very massive stars and possibly other fainter components. It is sometimes called the Tau Canis Majoris Cluster because of its bright central star.
It is about 4,200 light-years away from the solar system and has a diameter of about 7 light-years. It contains eta 60 stars which are only a few million years old and is classified as class I 3 p according to Trumpler. NGC 2364 was discovered by Giovanni Battista Hodierna, an Italian astronomer, around 1654.
