IC 2631 - ein Reflexionsnebel und Molekülwolken im Sternbild Chamäleon
IC 2631 - a reflection nebula and molecular clouds in the constellation Chameleon

Objektbeschreibung:

Object description:

The reflection nebula IC 2631 is the brightest part of the Chameleon-I molecular cloud, which is about 520 light-years away from Earth. This makes the Chameleon-I complex one of the closest star-forming regions. Inside the dark clouds are several hundred newly formed stars. Some of them are so luminous that they clear their surroundings of gas and dust masses and form small reflection nebulae.

Responsible for the illumination of IC 2631 is the extremely young and massiveT Tauri star HD 97300. It is part of the Chameleon-I group, a large number of T Tauri stars that are physically bound into the molecular cloud, which has a diameter of about 55 light-years. IC 2631 was discovered in 1900 by astronomer DeLisle Stewart and later included by Johan Ludvig Emil Dreyer in his index catalogue.

NGC 3620 is a Hubble-type SBab barred spiral about 66 million light years from Earth. Discovered in March 1837 by John Herschel.
