Object description Our image shows in detail the reflection nebula IC 2631 (Ced 112). It is located in the northern part of the Chameleon I dark cloud and is the brightest reflection nebula in this region. The gas and dust masses are illuminated by the hot and young star HD 97300 in the center of the nebula. HD 97300 is a very young and one of the most massive and brightest stars in the neighborhood in the southern constellation Chameleon. Similar to the light from a car headlight in a dense nebula, the star illuminates and scatters the dust particles surrounding it. For a long time, HD 97300 was placed in the category of T Tauri stars. However, ESO studies from 2016 suggest that this star is a more massive type of pre-main sequence star, a so-called Herbig Ae/Be star. |
