Object description The Vela supernova remnant - Our image shows a wide-angle view of the central region of the Vela supernova remnant. In the upper left of the image lies the H-II region RCW 33, which contains several bright open star clusters; however, it is not part of the supernova remnant. The filaments are approximately 800 to 1,000 light-years away from the solar system. The supernova explosion that created the filaments occurred about 11,000 to 12,000 years ago. We have much more information and additional images of the Vela supernova remnant here. |
