A wide-field view of the area around Messier 78
Messier 78 - ist der hellste Reflexionsnebel im Sternbild Orion. Unsere Widefielansicht zeigt ihn nahezu in Bildmitte. Er ist etwa 1.600 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt und ist in einen großen Komplex aus Dunkelwolken eingebettet. Östlich im Bild zieht sich ein Teil der H-II, bekannt auch als Barnards Loop, diagonal durch das Bild. Er ist ebenfalls etwa 1.500 Lichtjahre entfernt. NGC 2112 ist ein offener Sternhaufen, der mit einer Entfernung von 3.000 Lichtjahren deutlich hinter der H-II Region liegt.

description Messier 78 - is the brightest reflection nebula in the constellation Orion. Our wide-field view shows it near the center of the image. It is about 1,600 light-years away from the solar system and is embedded in a large complex of dark clouds. To the east in the image, a portion of the H-II region-also known as Barnard's Loop-stretches diagonally across the frame. It is also about 1,500 light-years away.
