IC 2177 - a wide-field view of the Seagull Nebula in the constellation Monoceros
IC 2177 - ist das Zentrum einer großen H-II Sternentstehungsregion, vermischt mit blauen Reflexionsnebeln. Es handelt sich dabei um eine annähernd kreisförmige Struktur, ungefähr zentriert um den Be Stern HD 5336. Aufgrund seiner groben Formgebung wird er auch Möwen- oder Seemövennebel genannt.
Der Möwennebel ist Teil der Majoris OB1 Assoziation und steht in einer Entfernung von ca 3.750 Lichtjahren zum Sonnensystem. IC 2177 liegt entlang der Grenze zwischen den Sternbildern Monoceros und Canis Major. Östlich davon (im Bild links) liegt eine weitere H-II Region, katalogisiert als LBN 1036. Am nördlichen Rand liegt NGC 2353, ein großer heller offener Sternhaufen. Der helle Stern in der Mitte von LBN 1036 ist HD 56 207, der aber nur 400 Lichtjahre entfernt ist und somit weit vor den H-II Regionen steht.
Object description
IC 2177 - is the center of a large H-II star-forming region, intermingled with blue reflection nebulae. It is an approximately circular structure, roughly centered on the Be star HD 5336. Because of its rough shape, it is also called the Seagull Nebula.
The Seagull Nebula is part of the Majoris OB1 association and lies approximately 3,750 light-years from the solar system. IC 2177 lies along the border between the constellations Monoceros and Canis Major. To the east of it (on the left in the image) lies another H-II region, cataloged as LBN 1036. On the northern edge lies NGC 2353, a large, bright open star cluster. The bright star in the center of LBN 1036 is HD 56 207, which is only 400 light-years away and thus lies well in front of the H-II regions.
