DCld 343.0+2.8 - the dark tower in the constellation Scorpio
DCld 343.0+2.8 - die als "Dark Tower" bekannte kometare Globule DCld 343.0+2.8 im Sternbild Skorpion befindet sich im südwestlichen Teil des Sternbilds. Der Kopf der Globule zeigt in Richtung des offenen Sternhaufens NGC 6231, der sich links unten außerhalb des Bildfeldes befindet und das Zentrum der Scorpius OB1 Assoziation darstellt. Zahlreiche junge und heiße Sterne der Assoziation ionisieren den vorderen Teil der Molekülwolke und erzeugen den roten Emissionsnebelrand. Neben dem Emissionsgebieten sind fünf kleine blaue Reflexionsnebel um neu entstandene Sterne zu erkennen.
Die Region befindet sich in einer Entfernung von etwa 5.300 Lichtjahre zum Sonnensystem und der "Kopf" der Globule hat einen wahren Durchmesser von ungefähr 30 Lichtjahre.
Object description
DCld 343.0+2.8 - The cometary globule DCld 343.0+2.8, known as the “Dark Tower,” is located in the constellation Scorpius, in the southwestern part of the constellation. The head of the globule points toward the open star cluster NGC 6231, which lies just outside the field of view at the bottom left and represents the center of the Scorpius OB1 Association. Numerous young, hot stars in the association ionize the front part of the molecular cloud, creating the red emission nebula rim. In addition to the emission regions, five small blue reflection nebulae surrounding newly formed stars are visible.
The region is located about 5,300 light-years from the Solar System, and the “head” of the globule has a true diameter of approximately 30 light-years.
