NGC 6604 - ist ein, in das H-II Gebiet Sh2-54 eingebetteter, offener Sternhaufen vom Trumpler-Typ I 3 p im Sternbild Schlange. Die Region liegt nördlich der beiden H-II Regionen Messier 16 und Messier 17 und die hellsten Partien von Sh2-54 sind auch als LBN 70 und LBN 72 katalogisiert.
Der Sternhaufen ist rund 5.500 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt. Der noch relativ junge Sternhaufen ist der dichteste Bereich einer "Serpens OB" genannten Sternassoziation, die insgesamt etwa 100 Sterne der Spektralklassen O und B enthält, unter ihnen der Blaue Überriese HD 167 971. Das Objekt wurde am 15. Juli 1784 von Friedrich William Herschel entdeckt.
Object description
NGC 6604 - is a Trumpler Type I 3 p open cluster embedded in the H-II region Sh2-54 in the constellation Serpens. The region lies north of the two H-II regions Messier 16 and Messier 17, and the brightest parts of Sh2-54 are also cataloged as LBN 70 and LBN 72.
The star cluster is approximately 5,500 light-years away from the solar system. This relatively young star cluster is the densest part of a star association known as "Serpens OB," which contains a total of about 100 stars of spectral classes O and B, including the blue supergiant HD 167 971. The object was discovered on July 15, 1784, by Friedrich William Herschel.
