DCld 343.0+2.8 - unser Bild zeigt die kometare Globule DCld 343.0+2.8 im Sternbild Skorpion, die auch als "dark tower" bekannt ist. Der Kopf der Globule zeigt in Richtung des offenen Sternhaufens NGC 6231, der sich links unten außerhalb des Bildfeldes befindet und das Zentrum der Scorpius OB1 Assoziation darstellt. Zahlreiche junge und heiße Sterne der Assoziation ionisieren den vorderen Teil der Molekülwolke und erzeugen den roten Emissionsnebelrand. Neben dem Emissionsgebieten sind fünf kleine blaue Reflexionsnebel um neu entstandene Sterne zu erkennen.
Die Region befindet sich in einer Entfernung von etwa 5.300 Lichtjahre zum Sonnensystem und der "Kopf" der Globule hat einen wahren Durchmesser von ungefähr 30 Lichtjahren.
Object description
DCld 343.0+2.8 - our image shows the cometary globule DCld 343.0+2.8 in the constellation Scorpius, also known as the "dark tower." The head of the globule points toward the open star cluster NGC 6231, which is located at the bottom left, outside the field of view, and represents the center of the Scorpius OB1 Association. Numerous young, hot stars in the association ionize the front part of the molecular cloud, creating the red emission nebula rim. In addition to the emission regions, five small blue reflection nebulae surrounding newly formed stars are visible.
The region is located about 5,300 light-years from the Solar System, and the "head" of the globule has a true diameter of approximately 30 light-years.
