Messier 60 and NGC 4647 - Interacting Galaxies in the Constellation Virgo
Messier 60 und NGC 4647 - ist eine weitere große elliptische Galaxie im Sternbild Virgo. Sie ist schätzungsweise 54 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt, hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 120.000 Lichtjahren und ist ein Mitglied des Virgo-Galaxienhaufens. Interessant ist der nahe Begleiter NGC 4647, eine Spiralgalaxie. Man vermutete, dass beide Galaxien miteinander gravitativ wechselwirken, und Halton Arp katalogisierte sie in seinem Katalog unter der Nummer 116. NGC 4647 ist vermutlich 61 Millionen Lichtjahre entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 55 Millionene Lichtjahre
In Bildmitte unten finden sich die Galaxien 4637 und NGC 4638. Beide Galaxien sind ebenfalls Mitglieder des Virgo Galaxienhaufens und etwa 50 Millionen Lichtjahren vom Sonnensystem entfernt. Im Bild rechts oben ist eine weitere große elliptische Galaxie des Virgo Galaxienhaufens sichtbar. Sie ist von Charles Messier mit der Nummer 59 katalogisiert und ein detaillierteres Bild zeigen wir hier. Ein Mosaik von Messier 59 und Messier 60 zeigen wir hier.
Object description
Messier 60 and NGC 4647 - is one more large elliptical galaxy in the constellation Virgo. It is estimated to be 54 million light-years away from the Milky Way, has a diameter of about 120,000 light-years, and is a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster. Of particular interest is its close companion, NGC 4647, a spiral galaxy. It was suspected that the two galaxies interact gravitationally, and Halton Arp listed them in his catalog under number 116. NGC 4647 is believed to be 61 million light-years away and has a diameter of about 55 million light-years.
At the bottom center of the image are the galaxies NGC 4637 and NGC 4638. Both galaxies are also members of the Virgo galaxy cluster and are about 50 million light-years away from the solar system. In the upper right of the image, another large elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster is visible. It was cataloged by Charles Messier as number 59, and we show a more detailed image of it here.
