NGC 4216, NGC 4222 und 4206 - 3 "egde on" Galaxien im Sternbild Jungfrau
NGC 4216, NGC 4222, and NGC 4206—three “edge-on” galaxies in the constellation Virgo

Objektbeschreibung:

NGC 4216 - ist eine Balkenspirale im Sternbild Jungfrau. Von der Erde aus gesehen blicken wir annähernd auf die Kante der Galaxie Sie ist schätzungsweise 53 Millionen Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 130.000 Lichtjahren, ähnlich groß wie unsere Milchstraße. Die Spiralarme erscheinen als dunkle staubhaltige Wolken, beleuchtet vom hellen Kern der Galaxie. Die Galaxie ist unter der Katalognummer VCC 167 als Teil des Virgo-Clusters gelistet. Sie wurde am 17. April 1784 von Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel entdeckt.

Zusätzlich zeigt unser Bild 2 weitere edge-on Galaxien in Kantenstellung. Nördlich von NGC 4216 (oben im Bild) NGC 4222. Sie ist ebenfalls ein Teil des Virgo Clusters, etwa 75 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 65.000 Lichtjahre. Südlich von NGC 4216 steht NGC 4206. Sie ist schätzungsweise 29 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 60.000 Lichtjahren. Unter der Katalogbezeichnung VCC 145 zählt sie ebenfalls zum Virgo-Galaxienhaufen.

Object description

NGC 4216 - is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo. As seen from Earth, we are looking nearly edge-on at the galaxy. It is estimated to be 53 million light-years away from the solar system and has a diameter of about 130,000 light-years, similar in size to our Milky Way. The spiral arms appear as dark, dust-filled clouds illuminated by the galaxy’s bright core. The galaxy is listed under the catalog number VCC 167 as part of the Virgo Cluster. It was discovered on April 17, 1784, by Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel.

In addition, our image shows two more edge-on galaxies. North of NGC 4216 (at the top of the image) is NGC 4222. It is also part of the Virgo Cluster, located about 75 million light-years from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 65,000 light-years. South of NGC 4216 lies NGC 424206. It is estimated to be 29 million light-years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 60,000 light-years. Listed under the catalog designation VCC 145, it is also part of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.
