Objektbeschreibung:

NGC 2359 - unser Bild zeigt den Zentralbereich des Wolf-Rayet Nebels NGC 2359, auch bekannt unter der populäre Bezeichnung "Thors Helm". Der die Nebelmassen anregende Stern ist der Wolf-Rayet Stern HD 56 925 (WR 7) mit einer Temperatur von etwa 50.000 Grad Celsius. Die Region ist etwa 15.000 Lichtjahre vom Sonnensystem entfernt. Der zentrale Bereich hat einen Durchmesser von ungefähr 30 Lichtjahre und dehnt sich mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 25km/sek. aus. Die Gesamtmasse des Nebels wird auf 70 bis 140 Sonnenmassen geschätzt. Entdeckt wurde NGC 2359 von Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel am 31. Januar 1785.

Object description

2359 - Our image shows the central region of the Wolf-Rayet nebula NGC 2359, also known by the popular name "Thor's Helmet." The star exciting the nebula is the Wolf-Rayet star HD 56 925 (WR 7), with a temperature of about 50,000 degrees Celsius. The region is about 15,000 light-years away from the solar system. The central region has a diameter of approximately 30 light-years and is expanding at a speed of 25 km/sec. The total mass of the nebula is estimated to be between 70 and 140 solar masses. NGC 2359 was discovered by Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel on January 31, 1785.
