IC 2118 - der Hexenkopfnebel im Sternbild Eridanus
IC 2118 - the Witch Head Nebula in the constellation Eridaus

Objektbeschreibung:

Object description

IC 2118 (NGC 1909), also called the Witch's Head Nebula because of its shape, is an extremely faint reflection nebula in the constellation River Eridanus. It is excited to glow by Rigel, the brightest star (lower left in the image) in the constellation Orion. The nebula appears in blue light because its fine dust particles reflect blue light more effectively than the red part of the spectrum. Together with Rigel, it stands at a distance of about 1,000 light years from the solar system.

IC 2118 was discovered visually by Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel on 20 December 1786, the first photographic image was taken by Max Wolf on 16 January 1901.

When you realise as an amateur astronomer alive today how difficult it is to capture the Witch Nebula photographically, one get an idea of how dark the sky must have been in Herschel's days.
