Mercury

At the 9th of May we was able to observe a very rare transit of Mercury in front of the disc of our Sun. At transit time the distance Mercury - Earth was round about 83.371.000 Kilometer. The apparent diameter of Mercury was exactly 12.1 arc seconds.

To take not only the usual photos of the transit we was working together with a friend of us, who was recording images at the same time interval as we in Namibia. Afterward we was measering the parallax of Mercury an following calculating the value of the Astronomical Unit (AE).

A lot of images, our results and the mathematic behind our results can be found in our section "Special Projects".

« The animation left show the parallax of Mercury between Leer/Germany and Onjala/Namibia at 14:00:00 UTC
