NGC 292 in the northern part of the Small Magellanic
Cloud |
|
Description of
object:
The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is already visible with the naked eye as a small foggy area in the southern sky next to the Milky Way. Together with the Large Magellanic Cloud it forms a distinct pair in the southern sky.
The distance to the SMC is only 210000 light years. Because of this relatively small distance it is possible to distinguish many stars, star clusters and gas nebula in this irregularly shaped companion of the Milky Way.
