Object description
NGC 6871, NGC 6883, Biurakan 1 +2 and Ruprecht 172 - open star clusters in the constellation Cygnus

Short objekt description:

NGC 6871 is an open star cluster in the constellation Swan. Together with NGC 6883 and some exotic star clusters like Biurakan 1 and Biurakan 2 they are embedded in the large H-II region GN 20.07.1.02. The star clusters are located in the middle of the Milky Way in the constellation Swan and are almost lost in the many surrounding field stars.

NGC 6871

NGC 6871 contains nearly 50 stars and is classified as type IV 3 p n according to Trumpler. Its distance to the solar system is given as about 5000 light years and the age of the cluster as just under 10 million years. NGC 6871 was discovered by Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel on 23 September 1783.

NGC 6883

NGC 6883 contains almost 30 stars and is classified as type I 3 p n according to Trumpler. The star cluster was discovered by John Herschel on 19 August 1828.

Biurakan 1, Biurakan 2 and Ruprecht 172

The information about these two star clusters is very uncertain. Biurakan 1 is classified as type IV 3 p n according to Trumpler. Its distance from the solar system is given as about 1600 light-years and the age of the cluster as just under 18 million years. For Biurakan 2, the following information is available: Trumpler type III 2 p n, distance about 1100 light years and age of the stars about 11 million years. No further information is available for Ruprecht 172.
